In 1947, when Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru made his famous ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech, he urged our fellow countrymen and women to awaken to ‘life and freedom.’ He said, “A moment comes…but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance. It is fitting that at this solemn moment we take the pledge of dedication to the service of India and her people and to the still larger cause of humanity.”
As the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust celebrates 75 Years of Philanthropy, Nehru’s pledge of ‘dedication to the service of the nation’ made at the cusp of independence is as pertinent and relevant for the India that exists today as it was 60 years ago.
